Fallen smartphone brand Nokia challenges Apple, Samsung again

Nokia smartphones are poised for a comeback after former managers at the Finnish company licensed the handset brand from Microsoft and struck up partnerships with Google and phone manufacturer Foxconn.
Nokia was once the world's dominant cellphone maker but missed the shift to smartphones and then chose Microsoft's unpopular Windows operating system for its "Lumia" range.
Nokia quit smartphones in 2014 by selling its handset activities to Microsoft to focus on mobile network equipment. Microsoft continued selling Lumia smartphones under its own name but this year largely abandoned that business, too.
HMD Global, led by Nokia veteran Arto Nummela, wants to launch its first Nokia smartphone in the early part of next year using Google's (GOOGL.O) Android operating system.
Success will require a dash for scale by stealing business from Apple (AAPL.O), Samsung (005930.KS) and dozens of other players in a cut-throat industry.
"Consumers may be carrying different smartphones now, but are they really in love and loyal to those brands?" said Nummela in an interview.
The Nokia consumer brand lives on as the badge on cheaper, entry-level "feature phones" sold mainly in Asia, India and Eastern Europe, though Microsoft invested little to market the name in recent years. Smartphones typically cost anywhere from ten to 30 times as much as these basic phones, which sell for as little as $20.
"For a new entrant, having an established brand provides it with an instant on-ramp," said mobile phone analyst Ben Wood of CCS Insight, who suggested that phone vendors with weaker brands should not take the new challenge lightly.
"The barriers to entry for the Android phone space are low," said Wood. "What HMD has is the Nokia brand and management experience. The key to its success will be driving scale."
CEO Nummela, who was once responsible for Nokia's sales and product development, does not lack ambition.
"We want to be one of the key competitive players in the smartphone business," he told Reuters.
HMD President Florian Seiche previously worked at Siemens (SIEGn.DE), Orange, HTC and Nokia. Chief Marketing Officer Pekka Rantala is a former CEO of Rovio, the maker of the Angry Birds game, as well as a Nokia veteran.
"We are not going to skip any markets in the long term," Seiche said, adding that HMD had already set up offices in 40 locations around the world.
NO FUNDING FROM NOKIA CORP
HMD is owned by Smart Connect LP, a private equity fund run by Jean-Francois Baril, who was once in charge of Nokia's world-leading supply chain management system. Other HMD managers have put in money of their own.
HMD on Thursday took over the feature phone business that Nokia Corp (NOKIA.HE) sold to Microsoft. It has a licensing deal with Nokia giving it sole use of the brand on mobile phones and tablets for the next decade. It will pay Nokia royalties for the brand and patents, but Nokia has no direct investment in HMD.
HMD is building its smartphone operating system in partnership with Google and all its Nokia devices will be manufactured by Foxconn (2354.TW) of Taiwan, the world's largest contract manufacturer.
Nummela says his team's enduring relationships with phone service providers and retailers could help HMD quickly convince owners of Nokia feature phones to upgrade in markets like India, Indonesia and Russia.

The Nokia name is still on a tenth of the feature phones sold around the world, though in recent years it ceded ground to Samsung and TCL (000100.SZ), maker of Alcatel-brand phones, as well as smaller players, according to market research firm Strategy Analytics.
Shipments of Nokia feature phones plunged 40 percent in fiscal year 2015 and HMD must reverse that decline while trying to break back into the smartphone market, where hundreds of vendors compete by selling phones that can be hard to distinguish.
"The feature phone is the essence of the business," Wood said. "Don't be under any illusions that this market is over."

WhatsApp Launches Desktop App for Windows, Mac PC

Now chat from the comfort of your PC/laptop as WhatsApp has launched standalone App for Mac and Windows

The popular social messaging app, WhatsApp on Tuesday launched desktop apps for Windows and Mac OS. The apps are very similar to WhatsApp Web, the online client launched in January 2015. You can now download the new apps via the company’s site and are compatible with devices running Windows 8 or higher, Mac OS 10.9 and above. This is in addition to the existing apps for Android, iOS, Blackberry, and Windows Phone, among others.
“Like WhatsApp Web, our desktop app is simply an extension of your phone: the app mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device,” the company said. With the launch of desktop apps, WhatsApp is now available across all popular platforms in app form.
To download the app, visit here from your desktop browser. Then, open the app and scan the QR code using the WhatsApp app on your phone (look for WhatsApp Web menu under Settings).
Just like WhatsApp Web, the desktop apps work similarly to the WhatsApp Web client and the app will mirror conversations and messages from mobile devices.
The new desktop apps are synced with WhatsApp on mobile devices, and the app will run natively on the desktop, which means it will have support for native desktop notifications.
WhatsApp had earlier this year announced that it now had 1 billion monthly active users. Also, the messaging app service has been lately working on adding various features. It is expected to add call back, voicemail, zip file sharing, and video calls support to the service soon.

Inventor of Wi-Fi Technology – Austrian Actress Hedy Lamarr

Wireless networks have become most common at workplaces for business and home-based works. Usage of wireless networks is robust and at the same time, it is not highly secured. But, have you ever thought about its invention? Do you actually know the inventor of Wi-Fi? An essential component that has become a part of our life is Wi-Fi, the modern technology that assists people in bounteous ways. The modern technology which we are using currently was not invented by a skilled scientist or by some university.
Wi-Fi was invented by an Austrian actress. Surprising, right? You heard it correctly. The inventor of the modern technology is Wi-Fi which has now become the vital element for every person. Hedy Lamarr was once described as “the most beautiful woman in the world”. She was an Austrian actress who then turned as an inventor and she is behind the modern technology Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, that we’re enjoying now.
Hedy Lamarr – Actress Turned Out to be an Inventor

Hollywood is a haven where folks are often acknowledged a lot for their appearance than their skills and actress Hedy Lamarr was no exception. But, she invented an amazing thing in her leisure time to help end a war that has history spinning a kinder eye, connecting her to a bombshell of a completely different kind.

Hedy Lamarr owned the sort of appeal and charm that was haunting. It was an almost smoldering desire, with an outlandish accent to harmonize. She was once entitled “the most beautiful woman in the world.” Despite her name, Hedy Lamarr sounded dark and mysterious, she shared the screen with Hollywood legends like Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, and Jimmy Stewart, people rarely remember Hedy’s talent. Check out below why the most beautiful actress turned out to an inventor of the most useful technology.

Childhood – Early Life

Hedy Lamarr was born in 1914 in Vienna. In the year 1920, she completed her training in theater and began working as a script girl in the film industry and later became an actress. Her father was born to a Jewish family in Lemberg (Ukraine) who was a prosperous bank director. Hedy Lamarr’s mother was a pianist and Budapest resident who was grown up from an upper-class Jewish family.

Hollywood Actress

Lamarr was one of the most popular actresses between the late 1930s and 1950s and she starred in many Hollywood films with popular actors like Spencer Tracy, Clark Gable, and Jimmy Stewart. Some of her famous films include Algiers in 1938, I Take This Woman in 1940, Comrade X in 1940), Come Live With Me in 1941, among others.

Inventor

Hedy Lamarr has another side which is the intellectual side that had it turned out, it might have been the blueprint for her victory considerably behind Hollywood. Lamarr wasn’t just recognized for her gorgeous look, she has intelligence as well. It was actually the idea of Hedy Lamarr to develop a secret communications system which is particularly one that could guide a weapon using a technology called “frequency hopping” so that signal couldn’t be intercepted.

She worked with avant-garde composer George Antheil on the idea of frequency hopping spread-spectrum. She had the view of helping Allied war which led her to start developing spread spectrum and created some technology what we are now using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.
During her first marriage to Austrian military arms merchant Friedrich Mandl, she acquired an interest in applied sciences. She developed a concept that helped to create Bluetooth and some other components of modern wireless networks. One can find the principles she developed in modern technologies.
“Any girl can be glamorous, all you have to do is stand still and look stupid.”
                                                                                                          -Hedy Lamarr
“What? A Hollywood star? What was she doing inventing some piece of electrical engineering?” This way some of them discouraged and criticized her inventions. But those inventions led to the most popular and modern Wi-Fi technology.
Accompanying with composer George Antheil, Lamarr desired to contribute to the war against Nazism by developing a jam-proof radio guidance system for torpedoes. They developed a new frequency-hopping-spread-spectrum technology. The device actually worked likewise a piano roll, was patented in 1942, albeit it was never utilized by the military.

Though her invention was not employed in World War II, by the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, her frequency hopping technology was installed in US naval vessels. More importantly, the invention of Lamarr and Antheil paved the way for today’s spread-spectrum communications technology, which includes GPS, Bluetooth, cell phones and Wi-Fi networks.

The patent of Lamarr and Antheil’s invention.

Their contribution was awarded only much later in Lamarr’s life. In 1997, they received the EFF Pioneer Award (posthumously for Antheil) for making a notable contribution to computer sciences, while they were also both belatedly entered into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in the year 2014.

Later Life

Lamarr was also asked to use her celebrity status to sell war bonds. Apart from developing spread spectrum, Lamarr also made some other inventions that include improved traffic stoplight and a tablet that dissolves in water to form a carbonated drink. Though her inventions might be unsuccessful, Lamaar is an inventor. Unfortunately, people remember Lamaar for her beauty and not for her inventions.
At the age of 85, Lamarr died in Casselberry, Florida. Google created a Doodle to celebrate her 101st birth anniversary which tries to encompass the whole journey of how she lived as a celebrity during the day and spent night inventing new principles to help during the World War 2. Thanks to Hedy Lamarr for being a part of developing modern technology which has now become our part of life.

Soon you will get 100 Gbps speed into your computer with Li-Fi Like Systems

Li-Fi-like System intended to bring 100-Gbps Speeds Straight to Your Computer
Soon you will get 100 Gbps speed into your computer with Li-Fi Like Systems

Earlier the data which was transferred to our computer was not accurate and had drops while travelling a long way to its final destination that is you.  The data which travelled in the form of light has certain drops in midway due to various reasons. Now, researcher believe it’s all over.
How would it sound if we take the light all the way to the computer or TV, projecting it through the air over the last few meters and only converting it to an electronic signal at the end? That sounds amazing isn’t. The researches at Oxford University is  working on the similar technique with a system that takes light from the fiber, amplifies it, and beams it across a room to deliver data at more than 100 gigabits per second.
Ariel Gomez, a Ph.D. student in photonics at Oxford University who describes the system in IEEE Photonics Technology Letters says that such indoor optical wireless probably wouldn’t replace Wi-Fi, but if compared with data rates of 3 terabits per second and up, it’s certainly amazing and could find its uses. Wi-Fi, by contrast, can give a maximum top speed of about 7 Gb/s. And with light, there’s no worry about sticking to a limited set of radio frequencies. “If you’re in the optical window, you have virtually unlimited bandwidth and unlicensed spectrum,” Gomez says.
So to use this feature, you need to install a base station on the ceiling of a room, which would project the light toward the computer and also receive data heading out from the computer to the Internet.
The transceivers should be mounted with a wide field of view to make the alignment task easier, because the device relies on wavelength division multiplexing, which splits the signal into slightly different colours of light.  Just like a prism, which diffracts the light into several colours, the diffraction grating of the beam steerer bends each wavelength a different amount. With a 60° field of view, the team was able to transmit six different wavelengths, each at 37.4 Gb/s, for an aggregate bandwidth of 224 Gb/s. With a 36° field of view, they managed only three channels, for 112 Gb/s.

The system requires a direct line of sight, and for now the receiver must be in a fixed position. The next step is to develop a tracking and location system so that a user could place a laptop at a random spot on a table and have the system find it and create a link.
The team which is working on this technology also included researchers from University College, London, accomplished this using so-called holographic beam steering at both the transmitter and receiver ends. These use an array of liquid crystals to create a programmable diffraction grating that reflects the light in the desired direction. The device is similar to that used in projectors, says Dominic O’Brien, a photonics engineer at Oxford who directed the work.
Brien is a member of the Ultra-Parallel Visible Light Communications project, with colleagues at the Universities of Edinburgh, Strathclyde, St. Andrews, and Cambridge.  Among several goals one of their goals is to develop LiFi, which uses the light that’s also illuminating a room as a way to send data signals. He says LiFi usually refers to schemes based on visible wavelengths of light, whereas this system relies on infrared light at 1550 nm, which is used in telecommunications.
All these technologies—Wi-Fi, Li-Fi, optical wireless—may wind up being part of how people link devices to the Internet. There is no limitations in the field of technology and today or some other day the most advanced and reliable technology has to come and replace all others. The fact that remains is the time which the technology would take to develop.

Be Careful from new Facebook virus

Be Careful from new Facebook virus you get from friends as a new video post

Today in 28 of May group of hackers uploaded a new virus in Facebook. You can get a new notification from your friends. Where your friend posted about a new video which he/she make for his/her friends, and tagged all his/her friends on that status. And given a link which shortened. After victim open a link he/she redirected to famous hidemyass proxy website and after that notified for download a file.

I detect this just 5 minute ago. I still don't know what kind of virus is this. I think after victim open it his/her computer detect as zombie. And hackers can do all after that. I think its for DDosing websites.
So skip that notification on Facebook. I think its come with some apps on Facebook. After you open it on your account you give app permission to post that status on your timeline and tag all your friends.

Stay tuned with TA Tech Support and know about all cyber news. And you'll stay safe on internet.
